The Wanaka Community are rallying around to support Cosie. Like Blair Vining, he cannot access all the health help he needs through public services, and has to access his next course of treatment privately. Marj and Cosie are valued members of our school and wider community; Marj has been a esteemed member of our teaching team for 12 years. On Monday 2nd December, the staff are dressing up to raise some funds to help with treatments during this tough time. 'We're on Cosie's Team' is our theme and we want to raise some funds to put on a 'Give a Little' page supporters have set up for Cosie, to help with these medical costs. We are inviting children...and any parents who may wish to join us...to come dressed in their favourite sporting team's shirt or colours (as Cosie is a sports fanatic) and bring a gold coin donation. It will be nice to show Marj and Cosie how much we care and to support his upcoming medical costs. Come on join us ... 'Be on Cosie's Team!' School Photos School Photo proofs have been sent home with children this week. Please order as per instructions. Orders will close at Reception on Monday 25th November at 3pm. No late orders accepted. Situation Vacant! 'Parent Help Wanted' for the Scholastic Bookfair - Monday 25th to Friday 29th November before and after school. Reading Recovery Programme At the last Board Meeting, we heard from Jason about the Reading Recovery Programme taught by Marj Cosgrove, Jo Roberts and Megan McConnell. It was amazing to hear the breadth and quality of this resource in our school. We have adopted an approach that uses Kit South who, as a highly experienced and qualified specialist, who uses a phonological awareness programme that ensures the children who need support are ready to enter Reading Recovery. This helps ensure success and uses this approach in the most effective way. The school has a significant commitment to the Reading Recovery Programme. Marg Grieve and Emma Stewart continue this good work of Kit's throughout the school with Marg working with the year 3 and 4s and Emma working with the year 5 and 6s in small groups on phonological awareness and the STEPS programme. We are also using the work we are doing with Otago University and Jane Carroll to help make sure our new entrants are ready for formal literacy learning. It is another example of how Wanaka Primary is leading the way in national and international best practice to be at the forefront of future focused education. |

Great Camps A HUGE THANK YOU to all of our wonderful teachers after the busy 2-3 weeks we have had of camps. Every teacher has been on a camp with their class, with the Year 1 and 2 'camp activities' happening nearer the end of the year. Our teachers give up their nights, not just their days, on camp and it takes many days of planning to make sure they are a great experience. Feedback around the camps has been positive - whether they were at the Year 6 camps in Dunedin for 5 days, or the Year 5 camps to Camp Columba near Gore for 3 days, or the overnight Year 4 camps at Bannockburn or the tents on the school field for a night for the Year 3 camps. Our Year 2 students are sleeping overnight in a pod and our littlies will have a day of EOTC activities as their first 'camp' experience. Thanks again teachers for all the extra you do for our students. You are all TUMEKE! We will send out a quick survey to students and parents who helped on camp as part of our review process. If any parents who didn't go to camp would like to give feedback, please email the school office office@wanaka.school.nz and mark CAMP FEEDBACK in the subject line. Pantomime - 'Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits' The YEAR 6 DRAMA CLUB are performing their Pantomime 'Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits' in week 9 of this term. There is a matinee performance on Wednesday 11th December at 1pm and an evening performance on Thursday 12th December at 6pm. We invite all parents, grandparents and members of the community to come along and join us. Tickets are just $5 this year to help cover the costs of makeup and costumes. All students at Wanaka Primary School will be given the opportunity to see the dress rehearsal of the panto on the Wednesday morning and in the matinee performance. If students come to the evening performance they will need to pay the $5 admission. Thanks Wonderful Grandparents Next Tuesday we are holding a THANK YOU afternoon tea for our wonderful 'Grandparents in School' volunteers and our Reading Dogs volunteers. The Kapahaka group will entertain them. They are special people who help make a difference for our tamariki. Thank you to these amazing people. Reporting to Parents Please mark Wednesday 4th December on your calendars as this is the day (from 1.30-3.00pm) that we would love to have all parents come into classrooms/pods to see the learning, progress and achievements of their children. This is the day of our interactive reporting expo, which aligns with our Deep Learning Pedagogy of students reporting to parents about their learning, actively involving them. At this time parents/children will also be given the end of year report which has a new look - this now forms only part of the reporting process. We urge as many of you as possible to come along on this afternoon to see your child in action. We are also offering a 5.00-6.00pm slot for these presentations of learning for children who do not have a parent at the afternoon expo, but this will not have the same buzz as children also share the learning they may have done with others. Teachers will be available and free to approach whilst the expo is underway. If parents wish for a followup interview or extra time for the reporting they can also arrange this with the teacher on the day, or with a followup email. More info in upcoming newsletters. |

Writing Instruments and Colgate Recycling Programme Wanaka Primary School is a collection point for the 'Writing Instruments' and the 'Colgate Oral Care' Recycling Programme. Bins are located in the library foyer and the following products can be placed in the 'Writing Instruments' bin: pens, felt tips, highlighters, markers, mechanical pencils, fountain pens, ink cartridges, correction tape and white out pots. And in the 'Colgate Oral Care' bin: toothpaste tube and caps, floss containers, toothbrushes, toothbrush, toothpaste and floss outer packaging and mouthwash bottles. The waste is recycled and we can get recycled benches and tables for our efforts. A huge thank you goes out to Donnelle Dunlop as she has instigated and is managing this project on behalf of the school. |

Wanaka Trail Ride The Wanaka Trail Ride core crew have had their first meeting and plans are well underway for the ride that is taking place on Saturday 28th March 2020. The ride offers a unique and stunning, all-abilities trail bike ride over Deep Creek, Long Gully and Lindis Peak Stations. Riders have the rare opportunity to explore private high country farmland, whilst helping to raise funds for Wanaka Primary School and Montessori Children’s House. Over the last five years $142,000 has been donated to the schools. 100% volunteer managed, the ride is now firmly established on the trail ride circuit as one of the best in the country and volunteer roles are varied and we aim to make your time with us enjoyable and sociable with the added bonus that it's in a beautiful setting. Roles and times are being uploaded as we speak so you can soon jump online and select your favourite spot. For parents that are new to the school, or to those keen to support the ride for the first time we'll be giving you snippets of roles over the upcoming weeks to entice you to jump onboard. In the meantime take a look at this film by Ollie Larkin to see what it's all about and if you're keen to join the volunteer crew then we'd love to hear from you - volunteer@wanakatrailride.org. Alice Porter Our Tennis Champ Alice played for Wanaka Primary School in the 2019 Southern Primary and Intermediate Schools Championships last Friday. She managed to win a few but also lost a few games which meant she just missed out on qualifying for the South Island Champs. On Saturday and Sunday Alice played in the Southern Teams Event for Southern Lakes in the U12s against South Canterbury, Southland and Otago. Alice and Dan won all bar one of their match ups and are currently placed 2nd overall which includes U10, U12 and U14 age groups for the Southern Lakes teams. |
