BY MATTHEW ALBRIGHT | Staff writer A man's death in the custody of Washington Parish deputies and Bogalusa police is roiling the rural Louisiana town. The mayor-elect is calling for the police chief's ouster, and a federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed. We obtained video that shows some of the moments leading up to the man's death, and asked eight different law enforcement experts, many of them former officers themselves, to review it. Some said the man would still be alive if officers had followed proper procedure, while others said more information is needed. But all of them said the video raises life-or-death questions. When a mom who was arrested for secretly sending a recording device to school and posting some of the recordings on social media, she said she was trying to protect her daughter with special needs, who is largely wheelchair-bound and nonverbal. While it's an unusal case, it is part of a larger discussion in Louisiana about how to safeguard students who can't speak up for themselves — while preserving the privacy rights of teachers and other students. This story about a new law for cameras in special needs classrooms explains the issue. |
