A burger by any other name: EU finalizes ruling on fake meat What makes a burger a burger? According to the European Union, it’s not just meat from a cow or turkey. EU parliament has officially voted against a measure that would have banned using the term “burger” to refer to veggie patties and other meat substitutes. The measure supported by Europe’s largest farmer association argued that using the term burger for non-meats would create confusion. EU regulators say the term makes it easy for people to fit climate-friendly food into their diet. Honestly, the measure didn't make much sense, to begin with. Does the farmer association find the term “hot dog” confusing because they aren’t made of dogs? Then again, fake meat is getting harder to tell from the real thing.
