Central Mass. businesswomen in leadership feel marginalized

Many women in business are often one of few women – if not the only one – in the room, where they feel they aren't treated the same as their male counterparts.

A three-month WBJ investigation into 75 prominent Central Massachusetts business organizations found women comprise a disproportionately low percentage of senior executives and board seats, especially among the region's 17 public companies.

The highest-paying jobs among Central Massachusetts' most prominent organizations are overwhelming held by men, while the sectors with the greater gender mix are typically lower paying.

Companies with more women in leadership perform better

Studies show that companies with more women in senior management positions have better profits.

Diverse candidate pools lead to diverse companies

Central Massachusetts institutions with greater gender diversity say they've seen the value of equality and have wanted to match their leadership to the rest of their organization.

Business leadership is moving toward gender equality through legislation, advocacy, investors pushing for the value of diversity, and pressure stemming from the #MeToo movement.
