Your Monday evening update from the Lancashire Post
View email online | | | | | Feb 28, 2022 | | | | | | Good evening, For those of us of a certain age, the spectre of a nuclear war is a glimmer of something we remember from the past. During the Cold War and even into the late 80s, we lived with the thought that this was a possibility - however remote. People took to the streets to protest about the nuclear deterrent and there was even discussion about what we would do if there was ever a ‘three-minute warning.’ When the Berlin Wall came down, that changed and those tumbling bricks heralded a new, safer, calmer way of life across the globe. Now all of that has changed again in the time it took to translate one sentence. President Putin’s threat to the West that he was putting his nuclear deterrent ‘on alert’ sent a chill down the spines of those who can remember the dark days of the Iron Curtain. We all know that nuclear war is an existential threat - there would be no winners even among the survivors. Putin may, to quote one of our local MPs, have gone ‘full tonto’ but we have to find a way to pull him back from this brink before it is too late. Until next time, take care, Gillian Contact me at gillian.parkinson@jpimedia.co.uk | |
