MAY 22, 2024

Happy Wednesday, reader, and welcome back to another installment of your favorite newsletter. Here's what we've got for you today:

  • All the best beers for summer, ranked: We tasted 32 beers to figure out which ones are the best for summer sipping (or chugging, if you prefer). You can't go wrong with these in your cooler.
  • This year's best dive watches: Swap out your leather dress watch for the coolest seafaring timepieces of 2024 so far.
  • How to escape a bear: A large-carnivore ecologist chatted with us about avoiding Revenant-style encounters in the wild.

We Tasted and Ranked 32 of the Best Beers for Summer

What, exactly, is a “summer beer”? Is it a specific style, one that’s been packaged and marketed as a “summer ale” in recent years? Is it a special seasonal release that hits shelves between May and September? Or is it something a little more nebulous that can best be defined as “something you’d want to drink four to six of while you get sunburnt on the beach”?

For our money, you can’t go wrong with a wheat beer of some sort this time of year, but we decided to put our theory to the test by rounding up some of the most well-loved examples of the best styles of beer for summer — kölsches, goses, pale ales, pilsners, hefeweizens, Mexican lagers and American wheat beers.

We rounded up 13 InsideHook employees — some of whom are craft beer aficionados, some of whom almost never drink beer — and had them taste all 32 beers and rate them on a scale of zero to five in the hopes of getting an unbiased, definitive answer on what exactly the perfect summer beer entails. If you’re looking for some input on what to load your cooler with, check out how the ones we tasted all fared here.

Yesterday, we asked where you'd spend your perfect summer day. Here's what you said:

  • 12% of you are hitting the backcountry.
  • 20% of you are having drinks at your favorite bar.
  • 32% of you are relaxing at the beach
  • 36% of you are chilling in your backyard.

The Best New Dive Watches of 2024 (So Far)

Believe it or not, we’re almost halfway through 2024. What’s more, summer is on our doorstep, and it’s already time to swap out those leather-strapped dress watches for things we can take in the water. And while 2024 hasn’t been what we’d consider a dive watch super-year, we’ve certainly received our fair share of compelling, aquatically themed timepieces — especially amongst the mid-tier price segment, that horological sweet spot that, while not quite impulse-buy territory, provides tons of value without making you hide from your significant other for a week following a purchase.

IN THE NEWS

A Georgia quarterback is suing a Florida coach over a $14 million NIL deal gone wrong.

This is the reason why no one says “brb” or “gtg” anymore.

Over 800 stolen artifacts are still missing from the British Museum.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. almost really, really screwed the Jets.

You might have plastic in your testicles.

How to Escape a Bear

This story is part of our Adventureland series. Read all the extreme how-to guides here.

When hiking in remote wilderness, we know there’s every chance we’ll see a bear, but it can feel unlikely. We might have taken all the usual precautions, including carrying bear spray, and a chance encounter might still take you by surprise.

Want to avoid being chased — or worse — by a bear on your next backcountry excursion? Here’s how to live to tell the tale.

An Ocean Pool Is the Crown Jewel at This Luxe Caribbean Resort

BY AMANDA GABRIELE

“I’m going down again!” I said to my husband as I climbed out of a slightly rough Caribbean Sea this past winter. It was my birthday, and the staff at Wymara Resort and Villas surprised me with an afternoon in one of the property’s spectacular villas. Not only did it have two pools and a private overwater deck, but it also — to my great delight — featured a very large, very fast water slide that rocketed you into the deep blue with great force. I made it down three times before swallowing enough seawater to give me a coughing fit, but it was worth it. I would go down again right now if I could.

Where to Eat in Chicago’s Greektown Right Now

Save a few grand on that Orbitz ticket and instead head to Greektown, Chicago’s very own Greece-centric neighborhood. Greektown was founded in the early 1900s, eventually moving to its current location in the 1960s. It’s where both gyros and saganaki were introduced to the United States, so let that be your excuse to order an extra helping of both. But Greektown has more than just top-of-the-line Greek restaurants — think Jewish delis, a chicken tender-centric spot and even great ramen. Tap here for our top recommendations in the neighborhood.
