Weekly Epidemiological Update

20 July

  • 12% increase in global new cases reported compared to previous week, with over 3.4 million new cases
  • Increase in global COVID-19 case weekly incidence, with around 490 000 cases reported each day compared to 400 000 in the previous week
  • Almost 57 000 deaths were reported last week, a similar number to the previous week, following a steady decline in the number of deaths for over two months
  • Cumulative number of over 190 million cases and more than 4 million deaths reported globally
  • Special focus on the release of a WHO COVID-19 detailed surveillance data dashboard, including a downloadable database feature
  • Special focus on the phenotypic characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 VOCs Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta, and updates on the geographic distribution of VOCs

  • Strengthening clinical management of COVID-19 in Ghana
  • Receiving 2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines in Viet Nam donated by the United States of America through the COVAX Facility
  • COVID-19 readiness and response at Points of Entry in Armenia
  • Planning and decentralization in Mumbai, India to fight the second COVID-19 surge
  • Receiving 500 000 vaccines in Haiti donated by the United States of America through the COVAX Facility
  • Enhancing resilience among parents and children in the Syrian Arab Republic through the “My Hero is You” mental health campaign
  • Exploring the use of WHO’s COVID-19 vaccination online learning in countries
  • Progress on a subset of indicators from the SPRP 2021 Monitoring and Evaluation Framework
  • Updates on WHO’s financing to support countries in SPRP 2021 implementation and provision of critical supplies.
