Weekly Epidemiological Update

20 July

After an increasing trend over the past five weeks, globally, the number of weekly cases during the week of 11 to 17 July 2022 remained stable, with just under 6.3 million new cases. The number of new weekly deaths was similar to the figure reported during the previous week, with 11 000 fatalities reported.

In this edition, we also include an update on the circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs), including their geographic spread and prevalence.

COVID-19 pandemic fuels largest continued backslide in vaccinations in three decades

WHO and UNICEF reported the largest sustained decline in childhood vaccinations in approximately 30 years. This decline is taking place against a backdrop of rapidly rising rates of severe acute malnutrition, potentially leading to a child survival crisis.
