Weekly Epidemiological Update

25 January 2023

Globally, nearly 1.9 million new cases and over 12 000 deaths were reported in the week of 16 to 22 January 2023. In the last 28 days (26 December 2022 to 22 January 2023), over 11 million cases and over 55 000 new deaths were reported globally – a decrease of 25% and an increase of 13%, respectively, compared to the previous 28 days. As of 22 January 2023, over 664 million confirmed cases and over 6.7 million deaths have been reported globally.

WHO's Health Emergency Appeal 2023

WHO needs US$ 2.54 billion to provide help and respond to the urgent needs of the most vulnerable amongst a record 339 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Many are at risk of serious health threats, including disease outbreaks, nutritional crises, and lack of access to essential medical services, The funds will enable WHO to respond to 54 ongoing emergencies, 11 of which are Grade 3.

Donors making a difference: building skills, building capacity

A well-trained workforce is essential for reaching universal health coverage. WHO supports training across the globe. This week we visit, amongst others, Samoa, where emergency medical teams are rehearsing for cyclone season; India, where trainees are learning to stop disease-carrying pests; and Malaysia, where health workers are gaining the skills to care for patients living with dementia.
