Work-related fatal injury statistics released for 2024 to 2025

In the last year, 124 workers were killed in work-related incidents in Great Britain.

HSE's annual data release covers the period from April 2024 to March 2025.

The total of 124 worker deaths is lower than the previous year (138) but remains broadly in line with pre-pandemic levels.

The most common causes of fatal injuries are falls from height (35), being struck by a moving object (18), and being trapped by something collapsing or overturning (17).

We have also published the annual figures for mesothelioma, a cancer caused by past exposure to asbestos – 2,218 people died from the disease in 2023.

£400,000 fine for waste and recycling firm after council worker crushed

The worker sustained very serious injuries when a shovel loader was reversed into him at a waste facility.

He had been closing the tailgate on his tractor after tipping waste into a nearby bay, when the shovel loader was reversed without its operator realising he was there, crushing him between both vehicles.

HSE's investigation found that:

  • the work was not suitably risk assessed and appropriate control measures were not implemented
  • the company had also failed to implement suitable controls to segregate pedestrians and vehicles

Get guidance with HSE's publications

HSE offers a wide variety of publications containing guidance for workers, employers and the general public.

Like all HSE publications, our health and safety guidance leaflets are available to download on HSE's website.

You can also buy hard-copy versions of many of these titles, such as legal guides, through HSE Books.

Here is a selection of some of our most popular guidance publications:

HSE as a market surveillance authority for workplace products

We monitor and enforce legal requirements on the safety of most products used in the workplace, including any risks to health.

We have a duty to notify the Secretary of State about:

  • unsafe or non-compliant products
  • the measures taken and communicated by an economic operator

Products recalled or notified to HSE's Product Safety and Market Surveillance Unit, with a serious or high risk to the users, are published on GOV.UK's product safety alerts, reports and recalls webpage.

Working in hot temperatures

Employers must ensure workers are protected during hot weather.

There's no law for maximum working temperature, or when it's too hot to work, because every workplace is different.

HSE's website has a practical step guide on temperature in the workplace.
