Managing work-related violence and aggression

Violence and aggression at work can have a serious impact on your workers physical and mental health

HSE's guidance on violence at work will help you protect your workers. It will help you:

  • assess the risks
  • put the right controls in place
  • report and learn from incidents

We have specific guidance on how to support your workers after a violent incident. There are also examples drawn from typical situations where employers have reduced the risk of violence.

In addition, there is separate advice for workers, which explains how they can help employers prevent violent incidents at work.

Company fined after resident died in fall through floor

The construction company was fined £150,000 following the fatal incident

The 81-year-old man fell through a hole in his bathroom floor to the kitchen below and was found dead the following evening.

While converting the bathroom into a wet room, the company had removed floorboards to access pipework, but left an unguarded hole in the floor.

HSE's investigation into the fall found that the company failed to:

  • adequately secure the hole as its employees were not properly trained
  • carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, or a method statement, for the work involved

For more information read our press release on how the construction firm was fined after a resident died in a fall through his floor.

Other recent enforcement cases include:

  • Manufacturing company fined as worker suffers multiple fractures

  • HSE to prosecute Snowdome Limited following the death of a 12-year-old boy

Health and safety law poster: what you need to know

HSE law poster

The poster explains health and safety laws and lists what workers and their employers should do

If you employ anyone, you must either:

  • display the health and safety law poster where your workers can easily read it
  • provide each worker with the equivalent health and safety law leaflet

There are various versions of the law poster, so you can select the most appropriate for your business. You can:

HSE also provides health and safety law pocket cards. These are a legal alternative to the law poster and are easy to distribute for your workers to carry with them.
