NEW ALBUMS DROPPING TODAY TOMORROW’S BIRTHDAY OVER THE LINE! (From left) Jimmie Dale Gilmore with Steve Buscemi, Jeff Bridges and John Goodman In a 2002 interview, Jimmie Dale Gilmore told WSM-FM’s This Week In Americana host Rusty Miller about the positive reception of the just-released Flatlanders album, Now Again, but he also spoke of his work in the film world. “I’m not an actor,” he declared, “but I’ve ended up being friends with a lot of actors, producers and directors. When I got a call about the film The Big Lebowski, I thought they wanted me to do some music, but they had a part for me. As a result, I became friends with John Goodman and Jeff Bridges. Jeff’s a really good singer, and plays guitar about like I do – maybe better.” The part he played in the cult classic was Smokey, the long-haired bowler that got a gun pointed at him by a rabid Walter Sobchak (portrayed by John Goodman) following a disagreement . . . over the rules of the game of bowling. Saturday is Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s birthday, a great opportunity to revisit his music and his distinct tenor voice. And any day is a good day to watch The Big Lebowski. |
