Hello! I’m Jameson Fleming, Adweek’s News Editor, and I’m helping quarterback our coverage of the Super Bowl’s most entertaining part—the ads. This new newsletter will arrive in your inbox about twice a week (maybe more, once we get closer to the game), and will contain the latest Super Bowl news, trends, teasers and full ads. You’ve been selected to receive this newsletter because you’ve previously subscribed to our newsletters like AdFreak, Agencies or Brand Marketing. If you don’t want updates on Super Bowl ads, we get it—we’re all subscribed to a gazillion newsletters already. Just click here. With the introduction out of the way, let’s talk Super Bowl spots, which are going for more than $5 million. Announcements will start ramping up this week, and really get going next week as we’re less than five weeks away from the Eagles’ defense of their title (sorry, I’m a Philly guy). Some brands have already announced that they’re in the game—M&M’s, Colgate (starring Luke Wilson, side note: which is the better Wilson, Luke or Owen?), Pringles and Avocados From Mexico are all airing spots. In the car department, we’ve had lots of movement already. Mercedes Benz, Hyundai, Kia and Toyota will be participating, while past advertisers Jaguar and Land Rover are planning on sitting the game out. Since Anheuser-Busch has exclusive alcohol ad rights, Yellow Tail will also be airing a spot in the game, but in regional markets to circumvent the beer giant’s grip on the Super Bowl. Plus, Bumble will be making a splash during the Super Bowl with Serena Williams, but it's not clear yet whether that ad is actually running during the game on CBS. To stay on top of all Super Bowl-related news, bookmark our Super Bowl Tracker, which we update every time we catch wind of a brand committing to the game or sitting out, as well as teasers, trailers and full spots. If you have a tip about this year’s Super Bowl (or you have feedback about this newsletter and the team I root for), you can reach me at jameson.fleming@adweek.com. Until we see this year’s best creative, I’ll leave you with our mashup of last year’s ads: Every Super Bowl Ad in Under 2 Minutes. |
