My wife and I have been married for 12 years, but for seven of those years we were best described as the "walking divorced." Our relationship was built on our great sexual chemistry, but when she started experiencing pain during sex three years in and we were forced to abstain—our longest stretch was eight months—it became clear that we lacked the communication skills it takes to protect a marriage.
