Supporting Our Underprivileged & Communities

Team B|C donates generously to nonprofits dedicated to making a difference. We also take pride in our own nonprofit programs, Backpacks4Life and Crafting for a Cause.

There are few places where support staff, paralegals, and our brilliant attorneys donate their time to fill hundreds of backpacks of essential care items for the homeless.

You would be hard-pressed to find a more dedicated law firm. We set aside time to knit or crochet handmade beanies and scarves to give to the impoverished or homeless population to keep them warm during the winter months. Our team also provides handcrafted beanies and blankets for babies in NICU.

The results are a testament to what we can achieve when the team gets together to make it happen. A true rarity these days and proof that we love to give back.

During the holidays this year, Team B|C donated toys and gift cards for children and teenagers who are in foster care, created college scholarships for ambitious students (see this year's winner below), and gave monetary gifts to nonprofit organizations whose missions are aligned with the firm's values and vision of supporting our local communities.

2022 was our biggest year providing monetary and physical items to local organizations and churches. You can learn more about our Giving Back programs here.

New 2023 California Laws

Pink tax, Mansion tax, Feather Alert… sounds California posh, having nothing to do with laws of the land. But it is an interesting year with many new laws taking effect on January 1st (or soon thereafter).

Pink tax prohibits gender-based pricing on retail products and is determined by whom the marketing targets.

The so-called mansion tax is getting much attention since it involves millions of dollars in taxes on sales of homes north of $5M, with plans to aid the homeless with the funds. This law is scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2023.

Ever heard of a Feather Alert? This is the latest addition to the emergency response system program. A Feather Alert joins the Amber Alert, Silver Alert, Blue Alert, and Yellow Alert. A Feather Alert is activated when an indigenous person goes missing and is deemed at risk, along with investigating law enforcement tapping into local and tribal resources.

Californians will have new holidays, new healthcare laws, legal jaywalking, and greater protection for bicyclists -- a new law we applaud, given the number of personal injury losses we have recovered for our cyclist clients through the years.

Another area of new legislation that got our attention is the labor and employment laws. Every employer in California should familiarize themselves and understand how the new laws could affect their operations, especially minimum wage changes. They may need to write new policies or modify existing ones to comply and avoid penalties. Consult with your counsel or contact our employment attorneys at Bisnar Chase.

Product Dangers and The Year of Recalls

Not even halfway through 2022, Sedgewick Brand Protection reported that American products hit a 10-year high in the first quarter for recalls. Research showed that more than 1 billion items had been recalled by the end of summer due to poor design, contamination, dangerous ingredients, mislabeling, and adverse reactions.

These high numbers would seem troubling, but with advanced technologies like AI (Artificial Intelligence) and predictive analytics, early modeling and alerts are helping industries before catastrophic injuries and more deaths. This is good news for consumers, according to Duke law professor Nita Farahany.

Tesla had a rough year with back-to-back recalls that affected 30,000 Model X cars due to the potential for the airbag system deploying incorrectly and taillight issues on combined Model 3 and Model Y cars, increasing the risk of collisions.

Other car manufacturers issued recalls consistently throughout the year. It was an especially bad year for food. Everything from beef to cookie dough, baby formula (scarce as it is, to begin with), to faulty fitness equipment.

Water beads caused severe injury and death in babies and children. Water beads are used in gardens mostly, but in recent times, parents of autistic children have bought water beads to help their children with sensory issues.

In one case, a baby swallowed a water bead that her older brother dropped on the floor. The bead swelled in the baby's intestines, creating a maelstrom of violent organ chain reactions rendering the baby with a traumatic brain injury after fighting for her life.

Target recently stopped carrying the brand in the spotlight that rendered the most damage, but other brands are still on the shelves.

2022 Branch Out Scholarship Winner

2022 Winner, Alexandra Butcher

Twice a year, Team B|C selects two students in June and December to receive $1000 each towards college and $500 donated to a registered 501c3 charity of their choice.

This year we received over 500 essays, and selecting only one winner was tough.

There were so many moving essays on how they would improve their neighborhoods, help others, and what they plan to do in the future.

Our final 2022 winner, Alexandra, shared a moving story of abandonment in 7th grade and her journey to overcome the trauma. She is an inspiring young woman with plans to work in the mental health field and help heal others.

If you'd like to apply for our June 2023 scholarship, you can submit your essay to marketing@bestattorney.com or see more details here.
