The final Fiscal Year 2018 omnibus bill passed by Congress last week includes a $700 million increase for a new grant program under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) that can be used to fund science and STEM programs in your school and district. Science and Children has extended the deadlines for two upcoming calls for papers. Manuscripts on Visual Literacy are now due by April 1. Manuscripts on Problem-Based Learning are now due by April 15. Please see the complete call for papers list here.
A new study by the National Center for Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Education Research finds that expanding access to STEM classes in high school does not increase the number of students who obtain college degrees in STEM. Additionally, the report found that adding more high school STEM classes will not push black, Hispanic, and female students to become STEM majors at the same rate as the white and Asian men who currently predominate in those college disciplines. Work smarter not harder
Breakerspaces are areas where students demolish, repurpose, fix, or disassemble appliances, electronics, toys, and other devices to learn how they work, what components were used to create them, and how they were designed. Like any type of construction or demolition work, safety preparation is absolutely critical. When preparing a breakerspace activity, teachers should consider the following safety guidelines.
The deadline to submit a proposal for the 2019 NSTA National Conference in St. Louis, MO, is April 19. The St. Louis conference is slated for April 11–14, 2019. Deadline Apr. 1
The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum's program will show teachers of grades 5–8 how to bring the museum experience into their classrooms by exploring connections between informal STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education and authentic learning. Taking place in Washington, D.C., July 9–20, the institute is open to teachers nationwide who can commit to two weeks each summer for three summers.
Deadline Apr. 6
RESET provides upper middle level and high school educators with summer research experiences at participating Army Laboratories. The program aims to reinforce teachers' content knowledge through research experiences and interactions with Army and Department of Defense scientists and engineers. Selected teachers will participate in online learning as a cohort, with a subset of the cohort chosen to conduct research on-site with a mentor Army scientist or engineer.

To prepare middle level and high school teachers to use the curriculum Science and Our Food Supply curriculum developed jointly by the Food and Drug Administration and NSTA, FDA provides a multidimensional professional development program that will take place July 15–21 in Washington, D.C. Included in the program are transportation to and from Washington and all housing and meal expenses.
