What a solid edition we have for you today: historian Sarah E. Bond on the archaeologists recreating the smells of mummified ancient Egyptians; essayist Ed Simon on the “bizarre glory” and triumphant beauty of the Carnegie Museum’s Hall of Architecture; curator-writer Sadaf Padder on the contemporary artists who draw inspiration from Sufi traditions; and Debra Brehmer on self-taught Afro-Brazilian artist Madalena Santos Reinbolt’s enchanting “wool paintings.”

If only the world were so beautiful. But, alas, it’s not: An Australian university cancels a show by Khaled Sabsabi, the Lebanese-born artist who was dropped as the country’s 2026 Venice Biennale representative, while Colorado removes a portrait of Trump from its Capitol building, simply because he found it unflattering. In these dark times, we have to stick together. Please consider joining as a Hyperallergic Member to keep us strong, independent, and fearless.
