Plus, University of Utah graduation continues after on-campus protests
Good morning! Here are today’s temperatures: ⛅ 36 – 56° in Logan | 30% 💧 ⛅ 44 – 58° in Salt Lake | 40% 💧 ☀️ 51 – 84° in St. George "When the president of the United States gave a speech, really as a sermon, in front of the casket of the late Rev. Clementa Pickney — who was murdered by man in a South Carolina church in 2015 — it was almost as if the most complicated and tragic parts of our common collective national story, and in some ways the most beautiful, came together in that moment. And the most radical thing I think President Barack Obama could have said in that moment is what he did say: that we all need to give and receive grace," Josh DuBois writes. | What really happened between Rep. Celeste Maloy and Sen. Mike Lee? |
|
| | A shockwave went through Utah Republicans in the days before the state convention when Sen. Mike Lee endorsed the primary opponent of Rep. Celeste Maloy, which came as a surprise not just to political watchers, but to Maloy herself. She alluded to the rift during her convention speech, when she said, “Representing you is a sacred privilege. And I don’t take it for granted. That’s why I refuse to be a rubber stamp. I will not bow down to anyone. I’m not going to bow down to the party, to leadership, to the media, or to a senator.” In an interview with the Deseret News on Thursday, Maloy said Lee didn’t tell her he was going to endorse Colby Jenkins, who is running in the 2nd Congressional District Republican primary. Nor has he called her since. Lee also spoke to the Deseret News, explaining why he decided to endorse political newcomer Jenkins. Read more on what Maloy and Lee have said about the situation. |
| Interfaith America founder Eboo Patel asked the University of Utah graduating class to consider the significance of their diplomas and this moment. “It means that you know that the world is far more complicated than the day you entered. It means that you have spent the last several years growing your knowledge base and cultivating your skill set and you are therefore far more capable than you once thought. It means that at a time when our diverse democracy seems hopelessly divided, you can be counted on to build the bridges of cooperation,” he said. There are many ways to lead in a diverse democracy, Patel said. One method he described was with potlucks. "Host potlucks to save diverse democracy," he said. "... A potluck is the ultimate democratic forum. No mayor, governor or general can command people to potluck." Read more about the U’s graduation ceremony.
