What is Trauma-Informed Librarianship?

Trauma-informed isn’t just a buzzword—it’s essential. As librarians, small changes in how we design spaces and interact with visitors can make a huge difference in making all patrons feel safe and welcome. Watch the video for practical tips or read them below:

What is trauma-informed librarianship
  1. Create quiet zones with clear signage.
Reduce overstimulation and support nervous system regulation by offering low-sensory spaces where patrons can decompress.

  2. Offer multiple ways to access services.
Give patrons choices—self-checkout, online holds, phone assistance, or in-person help—so they can engage in whatever way feels most comfortable.

  3. Use transparent, predictable procedures.
Clearly explain what will happen during interactions or processes to help reduce uncertainty and build trust with patrons.

  4. Ask “How can I help?” instead of “What’s wrong?”
This small language shift removes judgment and puts the focus on support, opening the door for more positive and productive interactions.
