Astronaut brings Kelly Slater jersey into orbit

Surfing champion Kelly Slater may not have reached outer space yet, but one of his competition jerseys has. 

Astronaut Christina Hammock Koch, a big fan of Slater’s, has the autographed collectible with her aboard the International Space Station. 

Koch showed off her prized possession during a space-to-Earth video chat with Slater that was broadcast live.

Who’s playing BeachLife Festival in Redondo?

Counting Crows, the Steve Miller Band and Ziggy and Stephen Marley paying tribute to their father were among the acts announced today for the 2020 BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach.

The festival, in its second year, is scheduled for May 1-3 at Seaside Lagoon. The inaugural BeachLife drew about 12,000 fans each day.

King tides offer splashy preview of future

Some observers are concerned about a lack of urgency in preparing for sea-level rise along the Southern California coast.

So it’s considered a good thing, of sorts, when, on rare occasions, the sun and full moon align to create king tides - a water-level rise that hints at the future. Such was the case last week.

“It’s a time when people can observe with their own eyes what a higher sea level may look like - what beaches are under water, what roads are flooded,” said Annie Kohut Frankel of the California Coastal Commission.
