What’s an Extreme Cold Warning? Michigan could have them next week |
Get ready: The bitterly cold air that will flow into Michigan between Sunday and Wednesday is going to send our daytime high temperatures plunging into the single digits. Wind chills and “feels-like” temperatures could drop to 25 below zero. The National Weather Service has issued some reminders on the type of extreme weather warnings and advisories we could see next week as the coldest airmass of the winter spreads across Michigan. Timeline: The Arctic air will be steadily infiltrating Michigan’s air Sunday and Monday with the coldest temperatures Tuesday and early Wednesday morning. Actual temperatures will plunge to five below zero to 15 below zero for most of us in Michigan. The wind won’t be extremely strong but strong enough to send wind chills much lower than the actual temperature. An area of light snow will move across about the southeast third of Lower Michigan. Light accumulations are expected, but the roads will get slick. In the middle of Friday night snow will develop around Kalamazoo and Lansing and Jackson. The snow then slides east into Ann Arbor and Detroit for very early Saturday morning. The snow will be over by noon Saturday. |

Lions’ Dan Campbell: Detroit is a ‘sleeping giant’ for football |
Making strides: The Detroit Lions’ turnaround over the past two and a half years is something their fanbase has dreamt of since the franchise’s last moment of glory — the 1957 NFL championship. From local music artists creating multiple theme songs to bakeries making life-sized cakes in the likeness of receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, fan engagement is at an all-time high. Having been both a player and now the head coach in Detroit, Dan Campbell is more than aware of the significance. Speaking of fans: Eminem has been a staple at big Lions games over the years, including both home playoff games last season and the Vikings game last week, as well as the NFC Championship game at San Francisco. Here are other celebs who are Lions fans who you may spot at the NFC Divisional Round playoff game against Washington this Saturday night at Ford Field. Lions player in the making: Led by general manager Brad Holmes, Detroit has stockpiled young talent, with contributors throughout the roster selected in nearly every round. But Detroit took things to the next level earlier this week by calling “dibs” on a 31-pound, 6-month-old who went viral after being posted to TikTok by creator Madison Peltzer. |

Trump selects Dearborn Muslim cleric for inauguration prayer |
A Muslim cleric in Michigan will reportedly deliver a prayer during President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony. Imam Husham Al-Husainy of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center in Dearborn will be one of four faith leaders to deliver a benediction prayer during Trump’s inauguration on Monday, Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C., according to Matthew Foldi of the Washington Reporter. Finding the funds: Michigan House Republicans have updated their road funding plan. The proposal involves shifting all state tax already paid at the gas pump to roads, rather than the current split between fuel tax and sales tax. Increased funding would also come from the Corporate Income Tax, offset by cuts, increased revenue and expiring programs. An update: Legislation to stop tipped employees from becoming minimum wage workers has advanced with bipartisan support in the Michigan House. On Thursday, a bill maintaining the sub-minimum wage for tipped workers was reported out of a House committee by a nearly unanimous vote, with all Republicans and all but one Democrat approving. |

Michigan DNR pauses future land leases for solar arrays after ‘outcry’ over Gaylord site |
Environmental news: Michigan officials paused all future land leases for solar energy on state land after an outburst of criticism followed news of 420 acres of state forestland near Gaylord being considered for renewable energy. A top official with the state Department of Natural Resources told forestry advisors during a Wednesday, Jan. 15, meeting that the agency not only extended the public notice period for the Gaylord site but also halted consideration of future sites – at least temporarily. The developer of the dilapidated former Shaw Walker furniture factory is seeking more tax incentives from the city of Muskegon to help with the cost of the $220 million redevelopment to transform the downtown site into “The Shaw.” Developer Jon Rook is now hoping to get the city, and eventually the state’s, approval to participate in the Transformational Brownfield Program. Trinity Health says it’s spending $18 million to build a combined heat and power plant at its downtown Grand Rapids campus. The new plant, under construction now, will produce steam and a portion of Trinity’s electricity, according to a release. Once operational, the plant is expected to save Trinity Health $2.5 million annually and cut the carbon footprint of the campus by an estimated 26%. |

Here’s how much it will cost to camp in new yurts, treehouses by Lake Michigan |
Getting outdoors: Looking for a cool new place to camp near Lake Michigan? A year-round campsite with yurts and treehouses is planning to open this year in Ottawa County, offering a unique overnight experience just five minutes from the big lake. Here’s a look at the pricing for the treehouses, yurts and tent sites that campers can rent at the Idema Explorers Camp once it finally opens. Saginaw's annual series of outdoor ice-skating sessions on Saturdays in January and February depends on Mother Nature to keep the temperatures cold for the event to move forward. In recent years, warmer temperatures caused many of the sessions to be cancelled. But conditions in 2025 could favor this year’s Saturday ice-skating sessions, which kicks off its five-Saturday season Jan. 18. Staying on the water: Enjoy history with a view when you stay aboard this retired Great Lakes car ferry that serves as a “boatel” during the summertime. The S.S. City of Milwaukee, near Manistee, is taking reservations for the 2025 season. |
