If Pompeii were a “Mean Girls” character, it would probably ask: “Why are you so obsessed with me?”
Good morning. If Pompeii were a Mean Girls character, it would probably ask: “Why are you so obsessed with me?” The Regina George of ancient cities has long held our shared fascination, to say nothing of historians and researchers’ time and attention. In a newly released English version of his book The Buried City, archaeologist Gabriel Zuchtriegel takes us on an insider’s tour of the site, a third of which is still unexcavated, revealing clues to our collective infatuation. Sarah Bond dives in. In the news, a high school teacher from the Chicago suburb of Evanston is facing disciplinary action after he hung up a poster in his classroom that referenced the history of Jewish dissent. The print, created by a Jewish artist, was inspired by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s 1971 anti-war essay “Dissent.” Staff Writer Maya Pontone has the story.
