Has isolation changed your listening habits?
The Wall Street Journal this week reported that streaming of new pop music is down almost 30 percent since the pandemic really took hold. But streams of classic rock and pop are higher than ever.
I've been thinking a lot about the concept of comfort listening. The University of Michigan reckon we find comfort in listening to our favourite songs hundreds of times. That may be so, but my experience is different.
Comfort listening in my house has been more about the tone and spirit of a song than my familiarity with it. I've leaned into modern soul music more than ever, I find solace the polished production and weathered voices of old legends who are singing through the end of their careers (and lives).
Where I'm usually desperately searching for cutting edge sounds to test me, right now I just want something to soothe me. And some wisdom.
