At 6 she lost her best friend in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. At 7, she’s still struggling with trauma.

This week marks one year since 11 people were killed at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, by a suspect who had railed against Jews online.

While the 11 victims were older Jews — the youngest was 54, the oldest was 97 — young Jews have also been deeply scarred as they mourn both loved ones and strangers.

Julia Reinstein wrote about the scars of young Jews. Scars like those of Joyce Fienberg’s great-niece. When Fienberg, 75, was killed in the shooting her death left her 7-year-old great-niece broken and unsure how to comprehend the loss of her best friend.

In school, she stopped paying attention. She told her mother, “I have dreams during the day about bad guys shooting people.”

The young girl is just one of countless children in Pittsburgh and beyond who, at a formative time in their lives, have been traumatized by a massacre designed to make them afraid to be Jewish. Read Reinstein’s extraordinary report.

Republicans have no problem with the White House leaving information out of the transcript of Trump’s call with Ukraine

Earlier this week, Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman of the National Security Council told House impeachment investigators that the public version of the transcript detailing the controversial call between President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s president omitted some important details.

Yesterday, House Republicans brushed off the idea that the transcript was incomplete, with many of them pivoting to the line they’ve been echoing for weeks: “There was no quid pro quo.”

One Republican told us, “I’ve read the reports, and let me just tell you — it’s a nothingburger.”

Chile just pulled out of hosting the biggest climate conference of the year because of mass protests

The 2019 UN Climate Change Conference, called COP25, was supposed to take place in December in Santiago, Chile. It’s a massive, significant conference — thousands of government officials, business leaders, and activists from around the world were planning to attend.

Its future is up in the air, as Chile announced it would no longer host the conference amid growing civil unrest.

Earlier in October, Chile declared a state of emergency across parts of the country due to a surge of anti-government protests.

This is the second country to withdraw from hosting the 2019 climate conference. Brazil, the original host, abandoned its plans after Bolsonaro was elected president.
