Hurricane Hermine? The calendar tells us it’s fall, but the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea are reminding us we're still in the thick of hurricane season. And what had been an eerily quiet season – hey, nobody was complaining! – is heating up. That disturbance in the Caribbean has become a tropical depression, and is expected to eventually become Hurricane Hermine. Ugh. Troubled towers: Speaking of hurricanes, Metairie Towers, the huge condo building that was damaged during last year's Hurricane Ida will remain empty a while longer. An insurance dispute has snagged repairs at the seven-story building, but Chad Calder reports that things might get moving again soon. Lakefront development: On the north shore, meanwhile, developers are making a pitch for a new retirement community/hotel/retail development on the former Copeland land along the Mandeville lakefront. It might be a tough sell in development-averse Mandeville. In the blood: One of the things that makes cancer so dangerous is that the disease is often not detected until it’s too far along for effective treatment.
