What the recordings reveal: The warning signs experts found in audio of a father who murdered his family |
|
| | Nearly six months after the Jan. 4 murder-suicide in Enoch, Utah, where Michael Haight shot and killed seven members of his own family before turning the gun on himself, experts are examining the warning signs that Haight exhibited prior to the tragic murders. Earlier this month, the Deseret News obtained nearly 72 minutes of video taken from Michael Haight’s phone on Jan. 3, much of the content consisting of conversations between himself and his wife, Tausha Haight, regarding divorce. The recordings, most of which don't show any of the victims and appear to be taken from Michael Haight's lap, display many of the red flags that experts say are common in abusive relationships. “He sounds like and he mimics so many decent men in our lives,” said Kimmi Wolf with the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition. “That image of a domestic violence abuser being explosive, someone foaming at the mouth, someone wearing a literal ‘wife-beater’ T-shirt that’s stained — that image negates so much of what really happens.” After conversations with victim advocates and therapists who also reviewed the recordings, the Deseret News decided to publish portions of the audio with the hope that it highlights the warning signs and may serve as a reminder to the public — domestic violence and abuse comes in many shapes and forms, but is often different than what is portrayed in movies and television. |

| The much-anticipated 2023 NBA draft unfolded last night, and the Utah Jazz had a busy evening as they entered the draft holding the Nos. 9, 16 and 28 picks in the first round of the two-round draft. No. 9 pick: The Jazz selected Taylor Hendricks who just finished his freshman season at UCF. At 6-foot-9, and 210 pounds, Hendricks averaged 15.1 points, 7 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 0.9 steals. No. 16 pick: The Jazz addressed their need for a guard by selecting Baylor’s Keyonte George, who is a Texas native. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, George was an elite recruit coming out of high school and played one season at Baylor, where he averaged 15.3 points per game. No. 28 pick: For their third pick of the night, the Jazz added Ohio State guard Brice Sensabaugh. A 6-foot-6, 235-pound forward, Sensabaugh was efficient at Ohio State, averaging 16.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 48.2% from the field and 40.5% from 3-point range.
