How to have tropical fun in the middle of Detroit |
Plenty of us dream of summer vacation filled with endless days on the beach, sipping on a refreshing drink while soaking up the sun. One spot in Michigan is bringing the tropical flair straight to downtown Detroit. Located at Campus Martius Park, Cabana 313 is a two-story, open air hangout that opened just in time for summer. Visitors can also grab a meal, tropical cocktail, or other beverages next door at BrisaBar before lounging on the urban beach. Cabana 313 and BrisaBar are open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. Want to trade a beach experience for the mountains instead? Head to Sugarloaf Mountain Natural Area for spectacular views of Lake Superior. |

What to know about the ‘Good Trouble Lives On’ protests against Trump in Michigan |
Protesting the President Trump: As a followup to No Kings Day, another nationwide day of protest against President Donald Trump is planned in cities across the U.S. on Thursday, July 17, this time called Good Trouble Lives On. The protests are happening on the five-year anniversary of the death of Congressman John Lewis, who was known for encouraging “good trouble” in the pursuit of civil rights. Here are the protests that are planned for Michigan. Under investigation: The U.S. Department of Education has opened an investigation into foreign funding at the University of Michigan after a review allegedly revealed discrepancies in required financial disclosures. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is warning that President Donald Trump’s “chaotic policies” on tariffs will cost Michigan residents thousands of dollars each year. Whitmer on Tuesday, July 15, highlighted recent data from the Budget Lab at Yale University that shows the U.S. overall average effective tariff rate is at its highest point since 1910, reaching 20.6%. |

The DNR is chipping away at its big to-do list with 122 completed projects in 3 years |
Finishing the upgrades: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources had an exceptionally long to-do list starting in 2022 when the department received $273 million, an unprecedented amount of federal funding. Repairs and upgrades accumulated over decades stretched over 55 state parks that needed road, utility, bathroom and infrastructure repairs. Additionally, accessibility, educational and aesthetic upgrades at visitor centers and campgrounds. Forever chemicals: Samples of blood taken from bald eagle chicks before they learn to fly show that legacy pollution, even contaminants banned decades ago, continue to harm Michigan’s natural environment. Damn drawdown: State park managers plan to shrink Hall Lake, a popular boating and fishing lake between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, amid concerns that an aging dam could fail and wash out a road. |

Lions QB Jared Goff welcomes first child with his wife ahead of training camp |
Welcome to the world: Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff and his wife Christen announced the birth of their daughter, Romy Isabelle Goff, their first child. Kory Woods reports the couple shared the news via Instagram with photos set to Coldplay's "Green Eyes." The announcement comes as Goff prepares for his fifth season as Lions' starting quarterback following his career-best performance last season. Lions' Penei Sewell faces criticism: Former NFL All-Pro Mitchell Schwartz called the Lions' star offensive tackle "overrated," arguing that despite Sewell's run-blocking prowess, his pass protection doesn't justify his accolades. Kory Woods reports that Schwartz believes Philadelphia's Lane Johnson is the superior right tackle, despite Sewell's three Pro Bowl selections and recent ranking as PFF's top player under 25. Ex-Lions QB suspended as high school coach Former Detroit Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been suspended from his head coaching position at Miami Northwestern High School for providing impermissible benefits to players. Bridgewater admitted to covering Uber rides, meals, and recovery services for his team last season, reports Kory Woods. The Florida High School Athletic Association is investigating the matter, though Bridgewater claims he self-reported the payments and has vowed to remain with the program. |
