US Navy engineer and his teacher wife sentences to prison for a plot to sell nuclear sub secrets that were hidden in peanut butter sandwiches |
US Navy nuclear engineer Jonathan Toebbe, 44, and his wife, Diana Toebbe, 46, were both sentenced to long prison terms after they plotted to sell submarine secrets to Brazil. The methods of exchanging information were often hidden in things like chewing gum wrappers and peanut butter sandwiches. Jonathan Toebbe was sentenced to just over 19 years while Diana Toebbe was sentenced just over 21 and half years. Diana, who was a teacher at a private school, acted as a lookout while Jonathan delivered the highly classified information to foreign buyers near their Maryland home. “The Toebbes betrayed the American people and put our national security at significant risk when they selfishly attempted to sell highly sensitive information related to nuclear-powered warships for their own financial benefit,” said Brice Miller, a special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Here’s how the pair were caught and what else FBI agents found inside their home. |
