| | | | | | | | | | | Hamas failed to galvanize the Arab world. There can be no reckoning with October 7 while Netanyahu is in power. The crisis between the administrations in Israel and the U.S. is severe, but not yet irreparable.
These are just some of the voices from a panel I am chairing for Israel After October 7, a conference Haaretz is co-hosting with the UCLA Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies which will be broadcast on our site on March 17, and which I would like to personally invite you, our readers, to attend.
The Hamas assault on Israel on October 7 and the war it triggered in Gaza – by far the most deadly conflict between Israel and the Palestinians since 1948 – are seismic shocks whose impact is yet to be fully understood.
But after five months of devastation and unprecedented worldwide engagement, this conference is an opportunity to contextualize the daily news deluge, and analyse the profound changes this conflict has wrought on Israel, the Palestinians, and the vital relationships that constitute Israel's relations with the world.
Alongside my discussion, on the impact of October 7 and the Gaza war on Israel's foreign relations and international standing, there are panels on Israeli-Palestinian relations, on Israeli society and politics, and on the current state of relations between Israel and Jewish communities in North America and Europe, featuring politicians, analysts and civil society activists such as MK Ahmed Tibi, Anat Saragusti, Jonathan Freedland, Joshua Leifer and Maoz Inon.
Interspersed with these panels are guest speakers in conversation with senior Haaretz writers, including 'Biden whisperer' Thomas Friedman from the New York Times talking with Haaretz editor in chief Aluf Benn; ex-IDF deputy chief of staff Yair Golan, who's now running for leadership of Israel's Labor Party; and Amir Tibon, Haaretz's diplomatic correspondent, and his father Maj. Gen. (ret) Noam Tibon, recounting how Noam rescued his son under fire from Kibbutz Nahal Oz and how should take responsibility for October 7.
