| Hello QDT listeners, This week, we have a special crossover event between two of our shows. Mignon Fogarty, of Grammar Girl, has joined our new host Doug Fraser to discuss the history of the word "thou," and what it reveals about language, its relationship to class, and some other marvelous language tidbits. While we think of "thou" as the epitome of high class, fancy-pants language now, back in the day it was actually a more intimate and less formal version of "you." Because of that, it was often used as an insult. But what did that have to do with the Quakers' theory of a level society? Why did "thou" fall out of fashion? And what grammatical quirks did we lose as it did? All those answers are in the episode, and you can listen to it here. If you prefer to read the transcript, you can do that here. Soon, there’s more at stake than bad pipes and dry rot: during the demolition, evidence comes to light that points to the mysterious disappearance of a young wife and mother years before.
