SmartBreak: Question of the Day
Which of these writers was once an owner of the Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball?
When it comes to new ideas, do you get excited to explore and experiment? Or do you see that as an expensive waste of time? Can you let teams run with ideas? Or are you the one reigning them in with the P&L sheet? Innovation is a creative process, as we see in our top Leadership & Development story today. It’s messy. It takes time. You pull things apart and look at the pieces. You wander, you day dream. You break stuff. You scribble ideas. You scrutinize details. If you’re doing it right, your creative lab is a beautiful disaster. Walls splashed with ideas and research. Counters littered with product parts. Lab tables covered with rusty strategies and broken rules, ready to be retooled and shined. Sacks of moldy processes lined up by the door, waiting to be taken to the dump. This is where discovery happens. This is where ideas become reality. This is innovation. Lead this -- don’t manage it. Encourage the ideas. Buy the pizza and donuts. Don’t interrupt with “Our structure doesn’t support that.” Just conversations flow. The right solutions will emerge over time, perhaps in whole, but more likely in parts. And for gosh sakes, don’t rush it and don’t spoil it by aiming for efficiency or squishing it into existing systems. Time enough to refine things after the idea has had a chance to get its legs under it. I like the way Jerry Seinfeld put it: “If you’re efficient, you’re doing it the wrong way. The right way is the hard way.” Facts. What do you think? Let me know! And if you enjoy this brief, tell others so they can benefit also.
