While some have wondered whether Ukraine might be better off giving up on the “dead city,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “Our heroes are not giving up positions in Sievierodonetsk.” Zelenskyy hopes “the day will come when the number of losses, even for Russia, will exceed the permissible limit.” In other ominous news, Russian state media reported that Ukrainian defenders captured at the Azovstal steel plant — last month’s version of Sievierodonetsk — have been moved to Russia. | | Open Wounds | Uvalde Teacher Calls Police ‘Cowards’, McConaughey Begs for Gun Laws When shots broke out at Robb Elementary School, Arnulfo Reyes told his students to hide under tables and pretend to be asleep. After Reyes was shot he took his own advice and played dead. He heard police rushing into the school but couldn’t work out why it took them 70 minutes to storm the classroom. “There is no excuse for their actions and I will never forgive them,” said Reyes, who lost 11 students that day. | | Bleak Outlook | World Bank Slashes Global Growth ForecastThe Global Economic Prospects report released yesterday warned that the combined impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine could result in “a protracted period of feeble growth and elevated inflation.” The global lender revised its 2022 growth forecast from 4.1% to 2.9% — and it said that global growth could fall as low as 2.1% this year and 1.5% in 2023. “The danger of stagflation is considerable today,” wrote World Bank President David Malpass in the report’s foreword. “Subdued growth will likely persist throughout the decade because of weak investment in most of the world.” (Sources: Reuters, WSJ) |

INTRIGUING | | Dead Dolphins | Scientists Warn of Massive Environmental Costs of Ukraine War Since the invasion began, “several thousand” dead dolphins have washed up on beaches in Ukraine, Turkey and Bulgaria. Burns, sound pollution and sonar interference from Russian ships are all thought to have played a role. Mines have also prevented, for the first time in 30 years, conservationists at the Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park from digging channels to link the lagoons with the Black Sea. No water flow means no fish — which means no food for herons, egrets and avocets. These are just two examples. The precise nature of these irregularities came to light this year when the man sold his house and the new owner found bags and bags of unopened correspondence dated 2012 and 2013. The man, now 62, was arrested and accused of “infidelity in the safekeeping of documents.” The letters, meanwhile, have been returned to the post office — but they’ll have to wait for judicial clearance before they can be delivered. A collaboration between scientists and Native American tribes has pieced together a 3000-year history of a large, fire-prone forest in California’s Klamath Mountains — and the results, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, make for interesting reading. Analysis of biomass records, Indigenous oral history and fire scar records shows that “Native burning practices, along with a natural lightning-based fire regime, promoted long-term stability of the forest structure and composition.” The arrival of Europeans, who viewed local burning practices as destructive, resulted in increased forest density — and higher likelihood of devastating wildfires. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie clubbed together to buy Chateau Miraval, a wine estate in the south of France, for around $32 million in 2008, six years before they got married. The couple’s messy divorce was finalized three years ago, and in 2021 Jolie told Pitt she’d decided to sell her 40% stake in Miraval to a Luxembourg-based spirits manufacturer controlled by Russian oligarch Yuri Schefler. Pitt’s now suing Jolie for reneging on a mutual agreement not to sell their stake without the other’s permission. The PGA and European Tours have threatened to ban the players — no Ryder Cup for them! — and their public image will also suffer a blow.
