We all love the Metroparks. This month, a drive through any reservation is delightful as we gawk at the rainbow of foliage. But it can be difficult to maneuver between parks without a car, which is why the parks keep building trails. The idea -- as part of the 815-mile Cuyahoga County Greenways network -- is to link the parks together, to downtown Cleveland, and to Lake Erie. Thank goodness the weekend looks gorgeous to check out a trail and go play outside. - Laura |

Euclid Creek: Cleveland Metroparks on Wednesday held a groundbreaking to mark the start of construction for the first section of a four-phase project to extend the Euclid Creek Greenway north from the southern portion of the Euclid Creek Reservation to the reservation’s northern section on the lakefront. Steven Litt reports the Metroparks also will hold a ribbon cutting on Oct. 27 marking the completion of the mile-long Eastern Ledge Trail within the reservation. Mailing ballots: Election officials are warning voters to double-check their postage before returning their absentee ballots. Jake Zuckerman reports the required postage to return the ballot by mail can vary based on the number of items on the ballot – a longer ballot means more weight, which can mean more stamps. Ryan vs. Vance: National Senate Republicans are flocking to Ohio to try to help J.D. Vance across the finish line in the race for Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat, Andrew Tobias reports. Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott both appeared alongside Vance, the Republican Senate nominee in Ohio, at a campaign stop Wednesday in Columbus. Meanwhile, Sen. Joe Manchin, the centrist West Virginia Democrat, is scheduled to appear with Ryan on Thursday in Piketon. Nan Whaley: Nan Whaley, the Democratic nominee for governor, indicated Wednesday that if elected, she likely would fight with Republican state lawmakers the first two years of her term and seek to pass her agenda after another redistricting fight. Jeremy Pelzer reports Whaley, the former mayor of Dayton, answered questions during a forum held by the Columbus Metropolitan Club that Republican Gov. Mike DeWine declined to attend. Taxpayer lawsuit: The Ohio Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by two Northeast Ohio taxpayers who claimed the state “double-taxed” them and thousands of other Ohioans because they never received W-2 forms from their employers. Jeremy Pelzer reports that all seven justices voted without comment to dismiss the suit, which stated that when Ohio taxpayers are unable to provide information from their W-2 forms, the state instructs them to list on their tax filing that no state income tax was withheld by their employers – even when their employers did withhold tax. Randazzo funds: Attorney General Dave Yost asked the Ohio Supreme Court on Tuesday to press pause on a lower court’s decision unfreezing millions of dollars in assets of a former utility regulator accused of taking a $4.3 million bribe. In a motion filed Tuesday, attorneys for Yost argued that the lower court’s decision would allow Sam Randazzo to “liquidate” his assets and shield them from judgments the state may win in a civil lawsuit against him down the line, Jake Zuckerman reports. Death sentence: The Ohio Supreme Court on Wednesday unanimously upheld the death sentence for an inmate who murdered a fellow prisoner at the Warren Correctional Institute in Lebanon, outside Cincinnati, in 2019. Laura Hancock reports that Victoria Drain pleaded no contest to charges, including aggravated murder, and requested a three-judge panel consider her case rather than a jury. |

Cleveland’s Promise: At Almira Elementary School, Grace and a classmate were caught recording a TikTok video in the bathroom, Hannah Drown writes as part of the Cleveland’s Promise series. As a result, Grace had to spend the rest of the day in the school’s planning center –- a component of Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s innovative humanware approach that reframes behavior correction from something that’s done to the students to something that’s done with them. Restaurant violations: Zachary Smith compiles a list of the Kent restaurants and retailers cited for the most food inspection violations during the 2021-22 inspection year ending Feb. 28. Sixteen had at least 20 violations, with the top spot being cited with 112 violations. Helicopter work: Motorists along Interstate 271 east of Cleveland watched aerial linemen recently perform “proactive maintenance” for FirstEnergy, working on the static wire that runs from pole to pole and protects equipment from lightning strikes. Peter Krouse reports using a helicopter allows FirstEnergy to avoid disrupting traffic with a bucket truck, or having to access private property or environmentally sensitive areas. Applesauce: Ethan Holmes of Shaker Heights started his business in 2008, when he was just 15 years old. Now his applesauce company, Holmes Mouthwatering Applesauce, has grown too big for its current iteration, reports Paris Wolfe. History home: It is easy to see what drew Beth Clough and her late husband, David, to Clarendon Road in Cleveland Heights – a tree-lined street in a well-kept, middle-class neighborhood. But their new house came with a surprise when they bought it in 1990, reports Robert Higgs. They learned it had been the childhood home of Reuben Sturman -- the so-called “King of Porn,” who controlled a pornography empire in the 1960s that, at one time, included more than 200 companies. |

Ethan Liming: Ethan Liming, the Akron teen found unconscious near I Promise School’s basketball courts, died of blunt force trauma to his head, reports Molly Walsh. Liming died June 2 following a fight that stemmed from Liming and his friends firing a soft pellet gun at a group of teens. Tax evasion: A jury on Wednesday found a Strongsville dentist, who hasn’t paid federal income taxes since 1992, guilty of tax evasion, Adam Ferrise reports. The jury of nine women and three men deliberated for less than two hours before finding Douglas Smith, a self-described “sovereign citizen,” guilty of four tax-evasion charges. Police suspensions: Four Cleveland police officers received suspensions without pay for brawling outside a police union hall in November 2020, reports John Tucker. The incident, which began with banter between the officers during a party, escalated into a fight pitting three officers against one. The union plans to fight the suspensions. Princeton student: A search is underway for a missing Princeton University student from Cleveland who was last seen early Friday. Molly Walsh reports Misrach Ewunetie, 20, was last seen about 3 a.m. Friday in the vicinity of Scully Hall at the university in New Jersey. |
