Tuesday was one of the nights where there just weren’t ... enough ... screens. My YouTubeTV multi-view box needed a multi-view box. There were so many games going on — there’s DePaul taking Marquette to overtime, here’s Kentucky pulling away from Texas A&M and wait a minute what was that score in Tuscaloosa? — that it was hard to keep up, even for a professional keeper-upper like myself. Most of the time during the season, this sport is like a cozy companion escorting me through the winter. On Tuesday night, it was more like an overbearing mother-in-law (not that I know what that’s like). How much love is too much? How much excitement can we take? And is it really only mid-January?

The hits will keep coming right on through the first weekend in April. We’re doing our best here at Hoops HQ to stay on top of all of it. We’ve got some listicles and roundups for you today, and yes, I was tinkering with my Coach of the Year rankings all night long. We also have a special guest column from the attorney who is representing the Florida State players who are suing coach Leonard Hamilton for allegedly not delivering the NIL money he promised. I love this mix of stories because it reflects the diversity and creativity required to cover this sport properly. And not to give anything away, but next week we are going to make an addition to our correspondent pool that is going to help take this little project of ours to the next level.

I truly thank you for supporting and reading Hoops HQ. I hope you are enjoying our content and helping to spread the word. We’re getting all hands on deck for the upcoming stretch run, but even when the games are over, we’re going to keep on running. There’s never enough time, not to mention enough screens, to cover all of the action, but we’re going to do everything we can to deliver what we promised. —Seth

Breaking Down the Race for National Coach of the Year

The race for national Coach of the Year is always interesting because the criteria is so vague. Most people go with coaches whose teams exceeded expectations, but what about the coaches of the best teams? We tend to dismiss those with the most talent, but coaches are responsible for recruiting as well. Plus, coaching talented players and getting them to play as a cohesive unit is a lot harder than people think.

More than any other award, Coach of the Year is truly in the eye of the beholder. So behold my midseason top 10 rankings, listed from the bottom up.

No. 9 Kansas @ No. 2 Iowa State: The Cyclones jumped up to No. 2 in the latest AP poll after knocking off Texas Tech in overtime last weekend. Their only loss of the season came to No. 1 Auburn in Maui by two points. This will be one of their biggest tests since then, as a Kansas team that has won three straight in convincing fashion visits Ames hungry to make a statement. 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
