“It’s a bit like the Kardashians on wheels” is a Drive To Survive soundbite that’s come back to haunt Christian Horner this week, as his personal drama continues to dominate the headlines to the point that it’s been likened to ‘Keeping Up With The Carkrashians’. While he’s ultimately responsible for overseeing Max Verstappen’s incredible dominance right now, being top of the tree always comes with the risk of the people beneath you trying to chop it down. But who is holding the axe? Is the Verstappens, eager to leverage a big-money deal like Lewis Hamilton has found at Ferrari? Is it rival team bosses, sensing a moment of moment of weakness that can destabilise the best team, to perhaps steal away its best people while distracted? Or is it corporate Red Bull in Austria, launching a power grab of its own? Who knows for sure, but – especially in the F1 Paddock – you can’t rule out a Murder On The Orient Express scenario of it being all of them! At the same time, controversy is also stalking FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem as revelations about a compliance investigation reveals allegations of attempts to influence circuit safety sign-offs and even an F1 race result. The sooner we get transparency on that, the better. By: Charles Bradley, Global Editor in Chief Motorsport.com |
