Police proposal could put the squeeze on Baton Rouge parade organizers

For decades, the Baton Rouge Police Department has provided officers to block intersections, manage crowds and provide public safety during parades. But a proposal from the department and the Mayor's Office would push those costs to the events' organizers.

BRPD is facing a shrinking budget, and unloading the thousands of dollars in overtime pay officers receive now for working special events would help stabilize funds. However, the added costs could put in crimp in parades that are such a vital part of the city's culture.

Gov. Jeff Landry is making a big push as he tries to convince voters to approve a tax overhaul on the March 29 statewide ballot known as Amendment 2.

Several prominent advocacy groups have come out in support of the measure, including educators and business organizations. But people on both the left and the right are mounting a grassroots campaign against the amendment for divergent reasons.

In the middle of the effort, Landry has been crisscrossing the state and taking to the airwaves, saying approval of Amendment 2 would make Louisiana more attractive to investors and move the state closer to his goal of phasing out the income tax.
