Tuesday, 10 May New report from WHO on regulating cross-border marketing of alcohol Launching next Tuesday, this comprehensive report details the full extent of the way that alcohol is being marketed across national borders – often by digital means – and often regardless of the social, economic or cultural environment in receiving countries. It highlights how increasingly sophisticated advertising and promotion techniques, including linking alcohol brands to sports and cultural activities, sponsorships and use of e-mails, SMS and social media, are being used to increase customer loyalty and gain new customers. It shows that young people and heavy drinkers are increasingly targeted by alcohol advertising, often to the detriment of their health, and highlights the need for more effective national regulations and better international collaboration. Thursday, 12 May Talking Trash: Behind the Tobacco Industry’s “Green” Public Relations WHO and STOP will publish a new report and co-host an online event next Thursday, at 13:00 CEST. Experts from Africa, Asia, and Europe will discuss the environmental damage caused by tobacco companies, how they cover it up and how they can be held accountable. Panelists will explore major sources of pollution including cigarette butts, the most common source of single-use plastic pollution on Earth, and the new threat posed by electronic products. Register here The event is a precursor to World No Tobacco Day on 31 May. The theme this year is the environmental impact of tobacco – another reason to quit or never start using tobacco.
Friday, 13 May Health for All Film Festival Awards ceremony 2022 The Health for All Film Festival Awards ceremony will take place online at 17:00 CEST. Some of our jurors will join and we'll make this ceremony entertaining, informative and interactive. It will be a tribute to all champions of health! More than 1000 film makers from over 110 countries have submitted short films for the 3rd edition of the WHO Health for All Film Festival (HAFF), on themes ranging from the trauma of war to living with COVID-19. Around 70 films have been chosen for the shortlist and a jury composed of critically-acclaimed artists and Senior WHO experts advised WHO's Director-General for winners and the awards ceremony will be the place to reveal the winners! The 70 shortlisted films are available to view online in six playlists, one for each of the three main competition categories: Universal Health Coverage, Health emergencies, and Better health and well-being, as well as three more on Rehabilitation, Health innovation and Very Short Films. Journalists are invited to join Sharon Stone, Emilia Clarke, Mia Maestro and other jurors to hear their comments to the winners. It presents for the first time evidence on the global need for and access to assistive products and related services, highlighting that the need far outweighs access, and puts forward actions all sectors must take to redress the imbalance. Assistive technology or assistive products can enhance performance in all key functional domains such as mobility, hearing, self-care, vision, cognition and communication. They may be physical products, such as wheelchairs, prosthetics or spectacles, or digital software and apps. Those who need assistive technology include people with disability, older people, people with communicable and noncommunicable diseases including neglected tropical diseases, people with mental health conditions, people with gradual functional decline or loss of intrinsic capacity, and many people affected by humanitarian crises.
