Add a little holiday cheer to your weekend |
Michigan is looking quite festive as the holidays draw near. If you're looking to jump into the swing seasonal cheer this weekend, here are a few events to check out. Saginaw is gearing up to host its annual Holidays in the Heart of the City on Friday, Nov. 22. The celebration features a lighting ceremony with Santa and the Saginaw Youth Choir, Cookie House Competition, food vendors, special events and more. The Jackson Christmas Parade is also returning for its 33rd year on Friday. If you want to enjoy the sights from the comfort of your car, motorists can ride through nearly six miles of light displays at the Michigan International Speedway near Brooklyn. Guiding Light, a Grand Rapids nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals recover from addiction is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Meal on Saturday, Nov. 23. |

Burst of snow may accumulate a few inches in two areas of Lower Michigan |
Let it snow: Southwest Lower Michigan can expect two to four hours of snow toward sunrise Thursday. The second area of concentrated snow will fall on the inland part of northern Lower Michigan. The roads are warm, but the heavier snow could give an inch of slush accumulation. By Thursday evening, most of the snow should have melted off the grass. Rough waters: The National Weather Service is predicting up to 21-foot waves on the Great Lake during a gale Thursday. The gale warning issued for Wednesday night will continue through Monday. The most vigorous wave action is expected to come Thursday. The warning is split into two areas: north of Pentwater and south of Pentwater. Heating up: The surface water on Lake Huron is shattering the previous warmest water temperatures. This mass of warm water will influence Michigan’s first half of winter. Lake Ontario is also sitting at record warmth. |

Manufacturer to create dozens of jobs with new facility in Norton Shores |
A global automation manufacturer is expanding its North American capabilities by building a new facility in Norton Shores. Rollon Corporation is constructing a $16 million, 147,000-square-foot manufacturing facility that is expected to be operational in summer 2025, the Greater Muskegon Economic Development Corporation announced Tuesday. Transitional housing: Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties is taking a significant step toward addressing veteran homelessness in the region with the groundbreaking of its $5 million Sacred Heart Veteran Village development. On pause: Another community on the shores of Lake Michigan is taking time to think about the future of short-term rentals. The Village of Spring Lake issued a moratorium on any new short-term rental applications for the next six months, expiring May 18, 2025. |

Tigers’ Tarik Skubal unanimously wins 2024 AL Cy Young |
Champion: Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal has won the 2024 American League Cy Young Award. Skubal got all 30 first-place votes, capping a dominant season with baseball’s greatest individual honor for pitchers. The last Tigers’ pitcher to win the AL Cy Young was Max Scherzer in 2013. The Detroit Tigers already have the largest videoboard out of every team in the American League. Now, there will be new technology inside Comerica Park which has never been used before in all of professional sports. Construction is ongoing for the stadium’s posh, new Home Plate Club. Legend: Before Deanna Nolan made a name for herself playing basketball around the globe, she had to earn her stripes in pick-up games against guys on courts in her hometown of Flint. |

Into the great outdoors: 34 Michigan campgrounds open year-round |
Getting some fresh air: Camping is a four-season activity in Michigan and the state parks are game to see you in any weather. Campground amenities may vary based on weather restraints but many state parks now offer cabins, yurts, tiny houses and other lodging to shield you from any rain, sleet or snow on the forecast. Some popular year-round campsites are offline while they get a facelift. Here’s 34 state park campgrounds to visit during the closures. Oh, deer: Perhaps seeking refuge from armed hunters, a deer crashed through the window of a Saginaw County furniture store. About 3:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19 — the fourth day of Michigan’s firearm season for deer hunting — a female deer leaped through a large front window at Gardner White Furniture & Mattress Store in Kochville Township. Book your next trip: Allegiant Air is launching new flights next year from Gerald R. Ford International Airport to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida, and the airline is offering one-way fares to the destinations for $59 for a limited time on select flights. The new flights are launching in May 2025. |
