Bibb’s travels: Mayor Justin Bibb keeps popping up at events nowhere near Cleveland, from Washington to Austin, Texas. The mayor’s frequent out-of-town trips have placed Bibb on the national stage and drawn critical City Hall chatter. Courtney Astolfi reports Bibb views the trips as a core piece of his governing philosophy, intended to forge connections with federal leaders, mayors across the U.S. and others who can help deliver money and resources to Cleveland, or inspire new and creative city-level policies. CHEERS: A $300 million vision for transforming the city’s lakefront east of Burke Lakefront Airport took a big step Thursday toward the realization of a shovel-ready design that could tee up major construction grants. Steven Litt reports the Port of Cleveland announced that its board of directors approved a $3.75 million contract with the firm Arup Engineering to design the project and seek permits needed to advance it. Gun buyers: Gun ownership is changing, with more than 5.4 million first-time gun buyers in 2021, reports Olivia Mitchell. Over 33% of gun buyers in 2021 were women. In 2021, nearly 44% of retailers saw an increase of Black Americans buying guns. Issue 2: Voters will be asked Nov. 8 whether to approve Issue 2, a proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution that would prohibit local governments from allowing non-citizens from voting in Ohio elections. Opponents of Issue 2 say that non-citizens haven’t legally voted in Ohio for 204 years and that the way Issue 2 is written is problematic, Laura Hancock reports. |

Consent decree: A federal judge on Thursday extended his oversight of Cleveland police reform for two more years. Adam Ferrise reports Senior U.S. District Judge Solomon Oliver rejected the city’s attempts at ending the court-ordered reform, saying that while “the City has made substantial progress, it has not yet achieved substantial and effective compliance at this time.” Police grants: The U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday it would be awarding $139 million to 180 law enforcement agencies across the country, including several in Northern Ohio.The funding is expected to hire 973 additional full-time law enforcement professionals, Alexis Oatman reports. Emergency landing: A pilot made an emergency landing in Middlefield Township early Thursday, reports Molly Walsh. Michael Davey, 66, of Newbury Township, was traveling to Cleveland from Morristown, New Jersey, when his small aircraft experienced engine issues. Deer collision: A Willowick woman almost lost her ear after colliding with a deer while running a race Oct. 1, reports Molly Walsh. Rebecca Heasley, 40, and her sister, Victoria, were finishing up their last loop through Observatory Park as part of Geauga County Park District’s Space Race when the freak accident happened. Cultural Gardens: The proposed African-American Cultural Gardens received unanimous approval from the Cleveland Landmarks Commission for its final design after years of fundraising hiccups. Megan Sims reports that as part of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens in University Circle, the garden will consist of three pavilions representing the past, present and future. Lorain traffic: The Lorain County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday it received more than $94,000 in federal grants, geared toward “high visibility traffic enforcement,” including selective traffic and impaired driving, reports Alexis Oatman. |

Mammograms: When it comes to mammograms, don’t delay — even after a recent COVID-19 vaccination or booster. Gretchen Cuda Kroen reports that doctors want women to be aware that although earlier guidelines recommended that women postpone their mammograms for several weeks after receiving their vaccinations, those recommendations have since changed. Highest home sales: Ten Cuyahoga County homes sold for at least $1.1 million in September, including the highest sale in Cuyahoga County since 2018, a $7 million home in Lakewood. Zachary Smith reports cities with multiple home sales of at least $1.1 million were Hunting Valley, Shaker Heights, and Solon, with two each. Crystal Clinic: The Fairlawn-based Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center will take over operations of St. Vincent Charity Medical Center’s orthopedic and spine medical services in several locations on Nov. 15, reports Julie Washington. As a result, St. Vincent Spine and Orthopedic Institute locations in Independence, Solon, Westlake, Willoughby and Warren will remain open past Nov. 15, when St. Vincent ends surgical, inpatient and general emergency department care and transitions to outpatient and wellness services. CAK: Spirit Airlines, which suspended service at the Akron-Canton Airport in June, won’t return to the airport after all, reports Susan Glaser. COVID-19 cases: The weekly number of COVID-19 cases in Ohio has dropped below 10,000 for the second time since April. The new cases dropped to 8,535 this week, from 9,997 last week, Julie Washington reports. Murder-suicide: Two men died Sunday in what Garfield Heights detectives say was a murder-suicide, reports Olivia Mitchell. Morris Ramsey, 89, of Hudson, died of asphyxia by cervical and chest compression with sharp force injuries. Alvin Hopes, 88, of Garfield Heights, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to a police report and the office of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner. |
