We decided that it was finally time to trade our tattered desert tent for something more substantial and less sandy. So we relocated to a small, wild valley in northern Idaho. Surrounded by mountains and forests, dotted with glacial lakes and lined with rocky streams, this land was the opposite of our African home, but we welcomed the change. Rather than observe lions, elephants and giraffes, we watched moose, white-tailed deer and black bears crisscross our meadows.
