Dear Supporter,

In case you missed it, our latest Living Planet Report has revealed a shocking 68% decline on average in thousands of mammal, fish, bird, reptile and amphibian populations. All of this has happened in less than five decades.

"All this is in a blink of an eye compared to the
millions of years that many species have been living
on the planet."

- Marco Lambertini, Director General, WWF

Habitat loss including deforestation, driven by the way people are producing food, is the main cause of this decline.

What does this mean for us? Here are two examples…

  • Plants are vital to many of the natural systems we rely on for our well-being and survival – from the air we breathe to entire food chains. Right now, a staggering 1 in 5 plants are threatened with extinction.

We need healthy rivers, lakes and wetlands to support life on Earth. As
well as supplying drinking water and providing the nutrients that help our
food grow, they also support fish stocks that feed millions. But with the
freshwater environment under growing strain, 1 in 3 freshwater species
         are threatened with extinction.
