Walker, who recently visited a Danish deportation center. The 200 or so refugees who call it home have not been accused or found guilty of any crime. However, their applications for asylum in Denmark have been rejected. There are more refugees on the planet now than at any time in recorded history. The majority are hosted by poor, low- and middle-income countries, and countries in the Middle East and Africa — which take in the most asylum seekers — are overwhelmed. “Even the doors to wealthy, progressive countries — like Denmark — are slowly closing,” Walker writes. “Resources are finite, they say, and the priority must be taking care of their own citizens.” Read more about what it’s like for those who leave home to survive and can never go back. | Will Sen. Lee get his way in the Senate leadership race? |
|
| | Brigham Tomco writes: Utah Sen. Mike Lee is playing a major role in the debate over who will lead the U.S. Senate in 2025 as former President Donald Trump demands that the future majority leader helps fast track cabinet appointments. Republicans won back control of the Senate after flipping seats in West Virginia, Montana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, so the next leader of the Republican Senate caucus will assume the role of Senate majority leader in January. Lee will moderate a candidate forum between the three senators running to replace outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Tuesday. The secret ballot vote for McConnell’s successor will take place on Wednesday morning. Candidates vying for the body’s top position include McConnell’s No. 2 man, Senate Republican Whip John Thune of South Dakota; Thune’s predecessor, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas; and Sen. Rick Scott, R-Florida, the former chair of the Senate’s campaign arm. Read more about what Lee is looking for in the next Senate leader. | Utah college sports have been dominated this week by the intense game between BYU and the U of U, but Jason Swensen is turning his attention to the growing arena of collegiate mountain sports. Westminster University's Mountain Sports Program, which includes alpine ski, freeski and snowboard teams, is expanding to include competitive climbing and mountain biking, which Swensen says is “supporting intercollegiate athletic competition commensurate with Utah’s outdoor sports culture.” The program is fully sponsored by the Griffins’ athletic department, meaning student athletes enjoy full access to the school’s varsity weight room — along with the athletic department’s team of professional trainers, sports psychology sessions and even scholarship money.
