Hello, It’s Nabiha Syed, the Executive Director of the Mozilla Foundation. I'm about to ask you to make an end-of-year contribution to Mozilla to help fight against harmful tech practices, reclaim the internet, and create the digital future that we want. And first up, let me be real honest with you: when I first heard ‘Reclaim the Internet’, my immediate thought was why would we want to go back? The internet of the past wasn’t some mythical, perfect place. I didn’t like waiting for someone to get off the phone so I could use dial up. That old internet was (still) dominated by Western countries, and huge numbers of people didn't have internet access at all. So I asked myself: What are we nostalgic for? What is making us long for this other time? It's hope. We had optimism. We had a sense of wonder about what the web could do, and this sense of urgency that if we worked hard enough, we were going to get a future that was better for all of us. We believed that. We believed that no one was going to build technology about us without us. That if we joined the party and paid attention, we could guarantee something better for everyone. That is the promise, and that is the energy, joy and creativity that I'm nostalgic for. At Mozilla, I am determined that collectively, we can reclaim that hope. But to ensure we can get to work and build that future together, we’ve set an ambitious goal of raising $4,354,000 USD by the end of 2024. That is why I am asking you directly: Can you contribute €10 to Mozilla to help reclaim the internet? Your donation will help rekindle the promise, creativity, and joy the internet is supposed to have. The Mozilla community is reclaiming that hope by building products and making policies that power the world we want to see – just as we have been doing for the last 25 years. Together, we are living our values and building a better future. A future where the tech that drives the internet is in the hands of the people who use it. I love the internet, and I really believe in its promise and its potential to do incredible things for our world. Since joining Mozilla, I've had hundreds of conversations with members of this community to understand how we can best work together to create a better digital future. Here’s what I know: We don't have to accept that control over emerging technology like AI is beyond our reach. We don't have to accept that our children are addicted to social media, nor that we are addicted to our phones. We don’t have to accept that forgoing our privacy online is just the price we pay to engage with the platforms we love. And fortunately, we don’t have to accept the feeling that we are alone in our concerns – and that’s why I’m so glad that Mozilla exists and has brought us together, because it’s going to take all of us. We can reclaim the hope of the internet, and then get to work building the web we want, together. In this moment of new threats and real change, the Mozilla community has the opportunity to shape the next wave of technology, ensuring it channels the energy, joy, and creativity the internet promised — but only if we act now. Contribute €10 to Mozilla today and together we will reach our ambitious goal of $4,354,000 USD. Every donation brings us one step closer to reclaiming the internet that we dreamed of – an internet that enhances our lives, promotes our agency and helps us be our best selves. Together, we can fight for and win the digital future we deserve. Thank you for being a part of this movement. Always yours, Nabiha Syed Executive Director Mozilla |
