The trip that led to Garland's selection: On June 15, a large Cavaliers contingent that included general manager Koby Altman, head coach John Beilein, assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff, director of scouting Brandon Weems and director of basketball administration Andrae Patterson walked into Steve Jackson’s gym -- a mini Staples Center that the L.A. Beilein's two-guard experience: When John Beilein was at the University of Michigan, he ran a two-guard front. During one stretch it was Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. Another time was a Caris LeVert-Derrick Walton duo. Now the 66-year-old coach who is making the NBA leap after four decades at lower levels is going to attempt the same approach in Cleveland, pairing last year’s first-rounder Collin Sexton with Garland, writes Fedor. Garland unlikely to play in summer league: Garland doesn’t have any health concerns. He showed that during a private workout with the Cavs in Los Angeles on Saturday. But given the torn meniscus Garland suffered in his fifth game at Vanderbilt, cutting his freshman season short and leading to plenty of mystery about his draft stock, the Cavs don’t want to push it, writes Fedor.
