Windows tip of the week

Use Hyper-V enhanced sessions

By Ed Bott

The Hyper-V virtualization platform included in Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 10 offers a great way to perform tasks in a session that's isolated from your main computing environment. One especially useful application is to try out an upcoming feature update before you install it for everyday use.

To use that virtual machine properly, make sure you set up an enhanced session. Doing so lets you connect to the VM using a Remote Desktop session, in which you can share local devices and resources, including the Windows Clipboard. You can also connect the VM's audio to your local speakers and automatically resize the virtual machine window.

In an enhanced session, you can even run in full-screen mode, either by clicking the Maximize button on the VMConnect window or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + Pause/Break. When running in a full screen, a small connection bar appears at the top of the window. Click the Pin icon to hide it.

To switch between Basic and Enhanced sessions, switch out of full-screen mode, and then toggle the Enhanced Session option on the View menu or click the corresponding command button, second from the right on the VMConnect toolbar.

Big data, a term that describes both structured and unstructured data, inundates businesses daily. And it’s only going to grow.
