Whale of a tail: Sculpture stops a train derailA train operator barely escaped an untimely demise recently thanks to the heroic efforts of… a whale statue? As strange as it sounds, an unassuming statue of a whale’s tail in The Netherlands stopped a derailed train that broke through a safety barrier. Nobody but the driver was on board and were the statue not there, the entire train would have plummeted to the ground. In another weird twist, the whale tail statue isn’t even made of concrete or steel. It's constructed of plastic, which is supposed to become weaker over time. And given that it was created more than 20 years ago, it’s unusual that it was able to hold an entire train car without issue. Talk about a fluke. Whales aren’t always a force for good. Sometimes they can cause massive damage. Tap or click here to see what happened on “the day it rained whale.” → |
