Customize your laptop power options for better battery life By Ed Bott Windows 10 does a generally good job with managing battery life on a laptop. But you can prevent one potentially annoying source of battery drain with a simple tweak. By default, when you close the lid on a laptop running Windows 10, the operating system goes into a sleep state, but it continues to run in the background. Those activities use a fraction of the power that the system uses when it's fully awake, but the cumulative impact can add up, especially over the course of several days. The worst-case scenario is that you reopen the lid and discover that your battery is critically low, just as you're getting ready to leave the office. The solution is to reconfigure the laptop's power options so that it automatically hibernates when you close the lid. When hibernating, Windows 10 doesn't process any background tasks and therefore doesn't drain the battery. To make the change, go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep, and then click Additional Power Settings. That opens the old-style Control Panel, with Power Options selected. Click Choose What Closing The Lid Does and change the On Battery setting from Sleep to Hibernate. Click Save Changes to make the reconfiguration effective.
