Windows tip of the week

Open a Command Prompt window quickly

By Ed Bott

Graphical interfaces are fine, but for some jobs only a command line will do. If you want to change the file extension for a group of files, for example, you can type ren *.jpeg *.jpg and be done in a flash.

All modern versions of Windows have a powerful command-line processor. You can run it directly by tapping the Windows key and typing Cmd.exe, but that opens in a default folder. You then have to navigate your way through the folder hierarchy to get to the location with the files you want to manage.

The faster, easier way to open a Command Prompt window in a specific location is to start in File Explorer (Windows Explorer in Windows 7). Navigate to the folder that contains the files and subfolders you want to manage, then hold down Shift as you right-click. Select Open Command Window Here from the shortcut menu.
