Secret shortcuts to advanced system settings

by Ed Bott

Some of the most useful system settings in all of Windows are gathered together in the System Properties dialog box, a five-tabbed collection of geeky goodness. Some of the settings you'll find here are available via Control Panel > System and Security > System, where you'll find shortcuts on the left side of the System panel.

But Microsoft knows you want direct access to some of the advanced settings here, which is why several crucial settings have their own executable shortcuts that take you directly to specific System options. These commands are ideal when you want to create shortcuts to options you visit regularly.

The most useful is SystemPropertiesAdvanced, which takes you to the Advanced tab. That one's so popular it has an additional shortcut, AdvancedSystemSettings.

Other entries in this collection include:

  • SystemPropertiesPerformance Opens the Performance Options tab under System Properties/Advanced
  • SystemPropertiesDataExecutionPrevention Adjust DEP security settings
  • SystemPropertiesComputerName Change your computer or workgroup name
  • SystemPropertiesHardware Offers a shortcuts to Device Manager and a few obscure options
  • SystemPropertiesProtection Enable and configure System Protection/System Restore settings
  • SystemPropertiesRemote Set Remote Desktop options
