Willie Burton's 53-point performance against the Miami Heat stands as his moment of basketball immortality, though (at least for me) it pales in comparison to his story of personal redemption and victory. His transformation from a troubled athlete battling addiction to an assistant professor working toward his doctorate and a mentor coaching young people was an encouraging and fascinating read. Burton says that acknowledging his underlying struggles -- childhood trauma, exposure to violence in Detroit -- was key to his journey of recovery. "I never accepted that I had mental issues, and I never realized that me drinking and doing drugs was my coping mechanism," he explains. I really respect Burton’s honesty. Embracing the truth -- laying himself bare -- took enormous strength and courage. It probably also opened him up to criticism and judgment. But it was the only way for healing to take place.
